文物特色

华表由汉白玉雕成，通高约8米，下方的八方形、须弥座高为1.24米。华表柱身刻有云彩和姿态各异的蟠龙。这两根华表一粗一细，大小不一。

 

历史溯源

这两座华表原是圆明园安佑宫中的遗物之一，当年被安放在安佑宫琉璃泛坊前。据有关资料推断，这两座华表至迟建于乾隆七年（1742）。《燕京大学校刊》对如何从圆明园移至燕园有详细的记载。

1925年燕京大学建校舍时，只从圆明园运来了三根，第四根却被运到城里，1931年曾横卧在天安门前道南。当北京图书馆建文津新馆时，欲将燕大多余的一根华表搬走与天安门前的另一根合成一对，不料搬运时阴错阳差，结果使得燕大和北图的华表皆不成对。

 

Distinguishing Feature

They are carved by white marble, 8 meters in height, which has a 1.24 –meter high, eight-square Sumeru seat. Clouds and various postures of dragons are carved on their bodies. The two are of different sizes and one is thicker. 
 

History

trace These two Ornamental Columns are one of relics of AnYou palace in Yuanmingyuan. They were placed in front of the colored glaze lane in AnYou palace. According to relative data, it was built no later than 1742. Yenching University Journal had detailed description about how they were moved from to YanYuan.

 

In 1925 when the university built school buildings, only three ornamental columns were moved from Yuanmingyuan, the forth was transported to the city, which lied on the south in front of Tiananmen in 1931.When building the new library, the Beijing Library considered to make the odd one in Yenching, but because of the mistake during transportation, neither of Yenching or Beijing Library’s ornamental columns were made a pair.
