Distinguishing feature
In front of the Russian Building stand two square-shaped traditional pavilions. The two pavilions easily catch your eyes because they have exactly the same design and appearance; therefore, they are also named Sister Pavilions. Legend holds that during his stay in China, John Leighton Stuart missed his two daughters so much that he had the two pavilions built to express his feelings. However, it is simply a legend with little truth in it.
History
The two pavilions were built in 1924. The South Pavilion was originally called “Gande Building”, serving as the office building of women students. The North Pavilion was originally called “Defeng Building”, serving as the place for music teaching and students’ activities. How did the two pavilions get their names? According to Professor Shen Hong, they were named after Dr. Miner, former President of North China Union Women University.
