在临湖轩院内、正厅门前，有一座汉白玉鱼洗。鱼洗是古代一种装饰有鱼纹的盆状盥洗用具。临湖轩的这座鱼洗四周雕有麒麟、梅花等精美纹饰，底座上一侧刻有“大明永乐年造”字样，并有钤印“永乐御览之宝”（疑为后刻），另一侧刻诗一首：“圣主回銮肃百灵，紫云团盖翼苍精。属车剑履星辰丽，先驾旂常日月明。”

侯仁之先生认为底座是大明永乐的遗物，但鱼洗是清康熙时仿制的。临湖轩门外花坛内原有一座形制相同的鱼洗，但 2007年被盗，今只剩底座。如今，临湖轩院内的这座鱼洗可谓北大校园内迄今已知年代最早的地面文物遗存。至于其何时由何人置于燕园之内，尚不得而知。

History
Its base, according to the famed historical geographer Hou Renzhi, is a relic of the Ming dynasty, from Emperor Yongle’s time, but the fish wash itself is a copy during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty.
