Exploring  Peking UniversityUnderstanding ChinaConnecting The World

As one of the highlights of this year’s International Cultural Festival, the “Listening to the Voices of the World at Peking University” series of events sets sail again. With “communication” as its bond, the International Youth Speech brings together a group of young individuals with a Peking University background and a global perspective. Through their inspiring speeches, they will share insights and growth gained from connecting the spirit of Peking University with the pulse of the world in cross-cultural exchanges. They also hope to ignite the international dreams of more young students, encouraging them to explore Peking University, understand China, and connect with the world. The speeches will be delivered in both Chinese and English.

Speaker Introduction

Andrew Rule, from the United States, is a master student at Yenching Academy, Peking University, majoring in Chinese Studies (Literature and Culture). He has received several honors, including First Place in the 9th Bai Meigui Translation Competition in 2023, the Summa cum Laude academic honor in 2021, and the Williams College Senior Thesis Prize in Asian Studies in 2021.


Zihan LI, from China, is an undergraduate at the School of Foreign Languages, Peking University, majoring in French. She has consistently received the title of ‘Distinguished Student’ and the First-Class Scholarship at Peking University, earned the title of Outstanding Volunteer at Peking University, and won awards in competitions such as the ‘Challenge Cup’ Academic Competition, ‘Wuhan Cup’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, National French Academic Forum, Asia-Pacific International Conference on Arts and Humanities, and Multilingual International Translation Competition.She has held several positions, including Deputy Secretary-General of the Student Secretariat for International, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Affairs at Peking University; Research Assistant at the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Peking University; Class monitor in the French Department; Outstanding Student Assistant at the Peking University Alumni Association; and Head of the Research Department at the Women in Business Association of Sciences Po, Paris.

Sophia Charles, from the United States, is a master student in History and Archaeology at the Yenching Academy, Peking University. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa in the United States and has received numerous awards, including the Chinese Government Scholarship in 2024; the Washburn Award for Best Paper in History (Harvard) in 2024; the Coolidge Award in Medieval Studies (Harvard) in 2024; finalist for the Award for Excellence in Academic Advising (Harvard) in 2024; the Ferguson History Prize (Harvard) in 2023; the Harvard Asia Center Research Grant in 2023; the Harvard Goldman Research Fund in 2023; the Harvard Fairbank Research Fund in 2023; the Detur Book Prize (Harvard) in 2022; the Harvard Goldman Internship Grant in 2022. She was also a John Harvard Scholar in 2021 and a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship in 2020.

Nitvipa Jiraphas, from Thailand, is an undergraduate in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University. She has accepted many awards, including the Excellence Award in the Chinese Composition Competition in Thailand in November; an Award of Excellence in the 2023 Overseas Chinese School Essay Competition, organized by the Federation of Overseas Chinese Association; the Second place in two Thai Knowledge Bowls, in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023; the First place in the Photography and Poetry Competition in high school for both 2022-2023 and 2023-2024; a top-three position in Chinese speech competitions for both 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. Besides, she tutored Chinese at Praksa Withedsuksa School in 2023.

Michelle Maridiyah Abu, from Ghana, is a general advanced student majoring in Chinese at the School of Chinese as a Second Language, Peking University. She has received several awards, including the First Prize in the Chinese Ambassador’s Award for Brilliant Students in 2021, the Second Prize in the Chinese Ambassador’s Award for Brilliant Students in 2022, the Teaching Assistant of the Year Award from the Chinese Students Association at the University of Ghana, and the Third Prize in the Chinese Day speech contest organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana.


LOUIE KA CHUN, from Hong Kong, China, is an undergraduate majoring in International Political Economy at the School of International Studies, Peking University. He has served as a Youth Ambassador of the Hong Kong Immigration Department and has achieved both championship (05-2024) and Second Place (10-2024) titles in the National Golf Tournament of Higher Education.

Gróf Loretta, from Hungary, is a preparatory student at the School of Chinese as a Second Language, Peking University. She has been awarded both the EU Window Chinese Government Scholarship and the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship.

Fateha Bhuyain, from Bangladesh, is a general advanced student majoring in Chinese at the School of Chinese as a Second Language, Peking University. She came to Peking University this September to study Chinese. She enjoys learning Chinese and Chinese culture, especially Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting, Chinese opera, and ancient poetry. For her, this opportunity to study Chinese at Peking University is very valuable. She is determined to make the most of it, studying diligently every day and enriching her understanding of Chinese culture.

Juha Yoon, from South Korea, is an undergraduate at the School of Journalism & Communication, Peking University. She has participated in the AMC (Australian Mathematics Competition) held by Australian Maths Trust and won the Proficiency Award; participated in the “ASDAN Business Simulation Competition” held by ASSEDER and won the “Enterprise Course” award; took part in the “14th WB Chinese Speech Competition” organized by Wan Bang School and won the Third Prize; participated in the “WB Science Knowledge Competition” organized by Wan Bang School and won the First Prize; joined the “WB Chinese Bridge” activity organized by Wan Bang School and won the “Excellent Host” award; participated in the “Mathematical Mind Map Design Competition” organized by Wan Bang School and won the Third Prize; and took part in the “English Novel Reading Project” organized by Wan Bang School and won the Third Prize.Currently, she serves as a member of the Learning Practice Department of the Student Union at the School of Journalism and Communication, the head of the Department of Culture at the Asian Youth Exchange Center, and a teaching assistant for the Korea-China Exchange Association Korean Language Lecture at Peking University.

1. The registration deadline is November 10, 2024, at 12:00. Successful submission of the questionnaire will be considered as registered.

2. Entry to the event requires a ticket. Ticket collection will be on November 11, 2024, from 9:00 to 18:30 at Office 329, New Sun Student Center, Peking University.  

3. Students who successfully register should arrive 10-15 minutes before the event starts.  

4. If you are not a member of the university, please confirm that you have permission to enter Peking University before registering.
