French student explores Peking University, October 24, 2024: As the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations approaches, French student Pacôme Sébastien reflects on his academic journey from France to China, and his growing understanding of the cultural and historical ties between the two nations.

Sébastien, a student at the Yenching Academy of Peking University, began his master’s degree at Sciences Po Paris, focusing on political science and the economic systems of France and Europe. However, his curiosity for broader global cultures, particularly the rich and complex history of China, led him to pursue further studies in Beijing. “China’s long and mysterious history fascinated me,” he explains, noting that studying abroad became a new starting point in his exploration of international cultures.
Arriving at PKU in 2023, Sébastien embarked on a two-year program studying Chinese history, with a special focus on aviation during the Republic of China period. Sébastien highly values the importance of mastering a language to better delve into deeper thoughts, which made him invest a lot of time in learning Chinese and reading historical materials in classical Chinese.This connection between China and France extends beyond technology. Sébastien emphasizes the deep cultural exchange that has taken place, with China introducing France to classical Chinese thought and literature, including Confucianism and Taoism. These intellectual exchanges, he argues, have laid a foundation for mutual respect and understanding which continues to this day.

Sébastien has also integrated himself into the vibrant academic and social life at PKU. He participates in extracurricular activities such as calligraphy classes and joins the long-distance running team, which have allowed him to connect with both Chinese and international students. “I admire the determination and diligence of Chinese students, and despite our cultural differences, our shared pursuit of knowledge has brought us closer,” he shared.
Meanwhile, a tea ceremony experience reminded him of the serenity and refinement in French wine tasting, while making dumplings by hand made him feel the importance of Chinese family reunions, rekindling a sense of togetherness that also exists in French celebrations.
