Curriculum

Modern executives must be well-versed both in the theories of practice and the practices themselves. Our academic philosophy encompasses five major areas of competency that constitute the core of the GK-EMBA curriculum. The teaching methods used throughout modules are designed to assist executives in understanding how theory translates into practice. The program adopts a theme-based curriculum that prepares participants for business both in China and world. The following themes constitute the core teaching philosophy of the GK-EMBA program:


Courses

Course offerings reflect a wide range of academic subjects and interests. They range from fundamentals of finance to advanced econometric principles; some courses emphasize leadership and strategy, while others delve deeply into business operations in China. Below is a sample of the courses offered:



Macroeconomics

This course introduces macroeconomic concepts and tools that enable managers to understand how an economy functions as a whole. Topics include economic growth, inflation, business cycles, and fiscal and monetary policies.

Venture Strategy Simulation

This course brings together disciplines executives have encountered throughout the program. Participants develop an integrated understanding of business planning and strategy, and use a computer-based management simulation to plan and test strategies in a competitive environment.

Foundations for Strategy Formulation

This course explores economic principles essential for the formulation and evaluation of strategy. Topics include industry analysis, strategic positioning and the boundaries of a firm.

Analytical Approach to Uncertainty

This course introduces fundamental probabilistic concepts that enable managers to make critical business decisions in the face of uncertainty.

Leadership in Organizations

This course focuses on the skills and ideas behind effective leadership: how to develop well-functioning teams, making good use of your personal and organizational resources, making difficult but critical decisions, and negotiation strategies.

Accounting for Management Planning and Control

This course details the use of financial information in management. Topics include profitability, performance measurement, and activity-based management and decision-making support.

Managerial Economics

This course introduces the economic principles of pricing. It provides an overview of, for example: the trade-off between margin and volume, price discrimination, and pricing in competitive environments.

Operations Management

This course examines the basic principles of managing the production and distribution of goods and services. It approaches operations as a managerial integration function and provides frameworks and tools to target and implement improvements in business processes.

Statistical Decision Analysis

This course teaches participants how to make better business decisions based on systematic data analysis. It provides the tools and skills necessary to interpret big data as it relates to company growth.

Financial Reporting System

This course introduces generally accepted accounting principles and concepts, and it trains executives to analyze financial statements.

Negotiation Strategies

Negotiation Strategies provides participants with the opportunity to develop their negotiation skills in a series of simulations and debriefings that address multicultural and multiparty issues. Each simulation has been chosen to highlight the central concepts that underlie negotiation strategy. These concepts are the fundamental building blocks for planning negotiation strategy, managing negotiations, and evaluating the quality of negotiation outcomes.

Strategic Crisis Management

This course provides conceptual tools for managers in high-pressure, complex crisis situations. Topics include management and media, dealing with activists and interest groups, and surviving legal, legislative and regulatory challenges.

Strategic Decisions in Operations

This course emphasizes strategic decision-making and its link to financial performance in a firm. It emphasizes the long-term, "big" decisions firms face when (re-)structuring their operations. Topics covered range from evaluating flexible technologies to designing supply chains.

Marketing Analytics

Data is being generated in new forms, volumes and speeds and a clear framework for assessing and communicating its value is necessary. In this course, students will address analytics as a leadership problem and how to improve organizational performance with the right data.

Managerial Finance

This course introduces concepts and techniques necessary to analyze and implement optimal financial decisions by firms. Topics include forecasting cash flows/earnings, discounting techniques and valuation, and determining their application to financial investments and capital investments.

Fintech

This course introduces fintech basis and applications. Topics include how big-data can facilitate business decisions, what fintech business opportunities in different industries, and block chain technology & application and so on.

Political Economy

This course offers an informed perspective into China's political economy which is critical for understanding of the Chinese economy and doing business in China. It provides an analytical framework, combined with case studies, for executives to understand the key features of central-local government relations and its interaction with the Chinese economy, and state capitalism, Chinese style.

Contemporary Issues about Chinese Financial Markets and Institutions

This course discusses various contemporary issues related to the Chinese financial markets and institutions. It offers select topics through mostly case discussions. Course objectives are to enhance students understanding of Chinese financial system, and prepare for more advanced discussions about Chinese economy and management.

Management in the Chinese Context

This course focuses on business operation and management in the Chinese context. It deepens the knowledge about the management practices of Chinese companies and the understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the course of doing business in China.

Leadership: Assessing,Adjusting,and Managing Organizational Contexts

This course prepares executives with a deeper understanding of contextual leadership as part of the capabilities as a great manager and leader. It also provides frameworks that can be used to develop these capabilities in the future.

Ethics and Executive Leadership

This course examines the role of the CEO and other top leaders in modern organizations. It highlights the ethical challenges they face, and it explores the implications of a variety of ethical frameworks used to facilitate more effective, complex organizational decision-making.

Global Strategy

This course exposes executives to the opportunities and risks that globalization brings. Topics include cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and management of multinational companies (particularly those in emerging markets).

The New Era of Marketing in China

This course discusses various issues related to the Chinese consumer market and the strategies that successful Chinese companies employ to leverage this market. It explores the history and the characteristics of the Chinese market, and various strategies that enabled companies to succeed in this market.

China in Transition

This course discusses the transitions of modern China and some of the new business models emerging in China in recent years.
