1. When is the deadline to submit the proof of language proficiency?

The minimum language requirement for the exchange program is TOEFL 88 & IELTS 6.5. The final language requirement depends on the host institution. Students applying for the 2023 Fall exchange programs must submit English language proficiency test scores via the online application portal on the stated application deadline. Applicants for 2024 Winter/Spring exchange programs who do not have their test scores by the time of application must submit proof of registration for the English Language Proficiency test. Students who do not provide the test scores or evidence of registration before the deadline will be invalid for application. The official language score must be submitted to the Office of Global Affairs before June 15, 2023, through email: exchangeoutbound@gsm.pku.edu.cn to confirm obtaining the final nomination qualification of targeted institutes. Students who delay submitting their scores are regarded as giving up the application for this exchange program.

2. Can I combine scores from multiple TOEFL tests to obtain a maximum score?

No. Language scores are only acknowledged from the single test result. You cannot accumulate the highest scores from each part of different tests.

3. I won’t get my TOEFL result until March. Should I submit the expired scores for now and update it later?

Expired scores are invalid, and you must submit valid proof.

4. Do I need to take GMAT?

No. GMAT scores are not required for exchange programs, but a good GMAT score is certainly an advantage in the case of comparable interviewers, and it is not a substitute for TOEFL or IELTS language scores.

5. Acceptable Tests

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (iBT), including the standard at-home version (verify with the host university before you take the home version) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic – Note: applicants are required to take the Academic Reading/Writing test within IELTS, not the General Training Reading/Writing test.

6. In what situation can the language proficiency requirement be waived?

Students who were full-time and received undergraduate degrees from four-year colleges/universities or international students (Non-Chinese Citizens) who is native English speaker. The language requirement will be waived at the time of nomination, and the final language requirement for admission is subject to the partner institution.

7. Is there a particular language requirement for non-English speaking host universities?

Being capable of speaking the local language is an asset during the nomination. Generally, you only need to prepare for English-teaching environment.
